Charadrius+Monachus=CHAMON

La creazione di una rete ecologica vera e propria, tra le aree protette, è il primo passo per la conservazione della biodiversità. La rete ecologica è l'obiettivo principale per tutti i membri AdriaPAN e alcune specie sono meglio di altre da scegliere per le prime analisi delle potenzialità di rete ecologica in ambiente adriatico. La protezione di alcune specie protette di bandiera può avere anche il vantaggio di preservare per il futuro gli habitat marini e costieri più caratteristici di questo mare.
Un'idea per un progetto di rete ecologica degli habitat, interessati da queste due specie, è partita alcune settimane fa con il nome di CHAMON (CHAradrius + MONachus), dal nome delle specie prescelte: la Foca monaca del Mediterraneo (Monachus monachus) e il Fratino (Charadrius alexandrinus). Grazie alla loro ampia gamma di distribuzione ed al fatto che vivono nei due habitat tipici del mare Adriatico, rocce e sabbia del litorale, queste due specie sono particolarmente interessanti per una prima fase di studi verso una rete ecologica.
L'idea è stata lanciata su questo stesso blog con un post di Aprile e subito diverse aree protette, croate e italiane così come altre organizzazioni, hanno manifestato il loro interesse.

The creation of a real ecological net, between protected areas, is the first step for the conservation of biodiversity. The ecological net is the main objective for all the AdriaPAN members. Some species are better than other as first experience in the Adriatic environment. The protection of some flag protected species can bring also the future advantage to preserve the marine and coastal habitat characteristic of this sea.
An idea for a project about ecological net of habitats, interested from these two species, started some weeks ago with the name of CHAMON (Charadrius+Monachus), from the names of the chosen species: the Mediterranean Monk seal (Monachus monachus) and the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus). Because of their wide range of distribution and the fact that they live in the two more typical habitat of Adriatic sea, rocky and sand littoral, these two species are particularly interesting for a first step of studies towards an ecological net.
The idea was launched on this same blog with a post of April and immediately several protected areas, Croatian and Italians, as well as other organization showed their interest.

Intesa tra le Aree Marine Protette italiane

Un documento di intesa è stato siglato da 13 delle quasi 30 Aree Marine Protette italiane, durante l'ultimo incontro tenutosi a Cabras, in Sardegna, presso l'AMP "Penisola Sinis Isola Mal di Ventre". Il documento finale elaborato durante un percorso di condivisione e preparazione del testo preparatorio, messo a punto poi durante le tre giornate di lavoro di Cabras, sarà ora sottoposto agli organi deliberativi anche delle AMP assenti in quell'appuntamento, affinchè tutti, in maniera unitaria a livello nazionanale, possano condividere le medesime linee di azione e gli stessi obiettivi.
I Soggetti gestori delle AMP, nel Protocollo di Intenti si impegnano a perseguire una serie di obiettivi, tra cui:

- istituire una rete ecologica di aree marine e costiere protette;
- redigere piani d’azione di conservazione e valorizzazione ;
- comunicare il valore delle risorse dell’ambiente marino e costiero del
mediterraneo;
- assicurare una maggiore e più efficace collaborazione tra i
soggetti gestori delle aree marine e costiere protette;
- promuovere la
cooperazione nel bacino mediterraneo;
- rafforzare la ricerca;
- migliorare le strutture di governance.

La prima azione attivata congiuntamente dal neonato gruppo di lavoro è stata quella di chiedere ufficialmente al Ministero dell'Ambiente il riconoscimento di un ruolo all'interno del Tavolo di lavoro creato nell'ambito della redazione della Strategia Italiana per la Biodiversità.

During the last meeting held in Sardinia (City of Cabras base of the "Penisola Sinis & Isola Mal di Ventre" Marine Protected Area) on the topic of Tourism in Marine Protected Areas, fourtheen of the almost 30 italian Marine Protected Areas signed a document for a strict collaboration one each other. Other MPAs join to the group as soon as they can officially recognice the document within their own administration. The first step of the group has been a request to the Italian Environment Minister for a MPAs role on the Italian Plan for Biodiversity Strategy.

Global Data Partnership for Critical Marine and Coastal Ecosystems

The importance of marine and coastal ecosystems for critical ecosystem services such as coastal protection, waste processing, food security, and carbon sequestration, is becoming ever more apparent. However, our quantitative knowledge of these contributions is heavily limited by a lack of baseline data. Such data are typically unavailable as consolidated global datasets, and are instead geographically dispersed and unorganised.
To address these challenges, the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) is convening a Global Data Partnership for Critical Marine and Coastal Ecosystems, a network of agencies, institutions and individuals working together to develop, collate, maintain and deliver high resolution, datasets (distributed, where necessary and/or appropriate) that are critical to a range of contemporary assessments, analyses and processes.
This Global Data Partnership is a contribution to the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO-BON), and in support of various multilateral environmental agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity. As such the process will be fully inclusive and transparent.

An initial teleconference will be planned for later in the year.

L’Università di Urbino bandisce, per l'Anno Accademico 2010/2011 n. 25 borse di studio riservate a candidati stranieri non residenti in Italia con cittadinanza albanese, bosniaca-erzegovina, croata, montenegrina e serba, in possesso dei requisiti di ammissione previsti dalla normativa vigente e con una buona conoscenza della lingua italiana (livello B2 del Consiglio d’Europa).

“Torre del Cerrano” is officially a MPA

.

Sulla Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana di mercoledì 7 aprile 2010, è stato pubblicato il Decreto istitutivo dell’Area Marina Protetta "Torre del Cerrano". Finalmente è stato ufficialmente riconosciuto come una nuova area protetta in Adriatico il luogo dove AdriaPAN ha mosso i primi passi.
Era il lontano 1997, quando, con l’art.4 della legge n.344, “Torre del Cerrano” entrò nell’elenco delle aree di reperimento per l’istituzione di un’Area Marina Protetta. Ci sono voluti una dozzina di anni di lavoro intenso con gli Enti Locali per arrivare all’istituzione dell’Area Marina Protetta.
I Decreti pubblicati di fatto sono due. Il primo, istitutivo dell’area protetta, è il D.M. 21 ottobre 2009 che individua l’area, definisce i termini di conservazione, affida al Consorzio costituito da comuni, provincia e regione, la gestione dell’Amp e stanzia il primo budget di risorse economiche nazionali per il funzionamento. Il secondo decreto, invece, il D.M. 218 del 28 luglio 2009 è il Regolamento delle discipline consentite in termini di salvaguardia.
Il Consorzio di Gestione, a cui lo Stato ha affidato la gestione con l’art.7 dello stesso decreto istitutivo, fanno parte i Comuni di Pineto e Silvi, la Provincia di Teramo e la Regione Abruzzo. L’atto costitutivo del Consorzio porta la data del 7 febbraio 2008.
L’area protetta è ricompresa in una fascia di mare della costa adriatica della costa della Regione Abruzzo in cui sono state rilevate formazioni geologiche, presenze naturalistiche e testimonianze storico-archeologiche di estremo interesse.
L’Area Marina Protetta si estende fino a 3 miglia nautiche dalla costa e si sviluppa per 7 chilometri dei quali 2,5km di duna sabbiosa lungo la riva. La superficie dell’Area Protetta è di circa 37 chilometri quadrati e ricomprende una ristretta zona B, un quadrato di circa un chilometro di lato di fronte a Torre Cerrano, una zona C di 14 chilometri quadrati, che si sviluppa per l’intera estensione del fronte mare fino a circa 2 chilometri dalla costa e un’ampia zona D, di forma trapezoidale, di circa 22 chilometri quadrati che si estende fino al limite delle tre miglia; dove esiste il riferimento fisico a 17 metri di profondità costituito dalle barriere sommerse dell’oasi di ripopolamento ittico della Provincia di Teramo.

Il Logo dell’istituenda Area Marina Protetta è stato studiato graficizzando due peculiarità naturalistiche dell’area: lo Zafferanetto delle spiagge (Romulea rollii) e la Trivia adriatica (Trivia multilirata) Entrambi elementi importanti per la loro e rappresentatività di flora e fauna protette, ma anche e soprattutto per la loro estrema rarità in Adriatico. Entrambe le specie sono presenti nei due habitat principali dell’AMP: quello costiero-dunale e quello marino-profondo.

On the Official Gazzette of Italian Republic of 2010 April the seventh, has been published the law that put “Torre del Cerrano”, the place where AdriaPAN started, in the list of Italian Marine Protected Areas. It is a new official MPA for the Adriatic Sea. The process for the Torre del Cerrano MPA started in 1997 with the Italian law n.334, after twelve years the recognition has become an official law.
The law has been published in a double formal Ministerial Act: the first is about the recognition as a MPA of the geographical surface and about a formal recognition of the MPA Authority for the management, the second is about the rules for conservation of the area.
The MPA Authority is the “Consorzio di Gestione Area Marina Protetta Torre del Cerrano” which is a public institution composed by local Municipalities (Pineto and Silvi) Province administration (Provincia di Teramo) and Regional Government (Regione Abruzzo) already founded on 2008 February the 7th.
The protected areas is a wild middle Adriatic coastal zone with interesting natural and archeological elements. It is three nautical miles wide on the sea surfaces and seven kilometers along the coast for a surface of 37 square kilometers.
The logo of Torre del Cerrano MPA has the image of two rare natural elements of the area of both the habitat the coastal and the marine one. The first painted as a pink starfish represent a small flower of the sand called, Zafferanetto delle Spiagge (Romulea rolii) and the second, painted as a blue grid around the star, is a small shell of Trivia Adriatica (Trivia multilirata).

Chamon: a new project in AdriaPAN

.

L'obiettivo principale di AdriaPAN, la rete delle aree protette costiere e marine adriatiche, è quello di preservare la biodiversità dell’area. La creazione di una vera e propria rete ecologica, tra le aree protette, è il primo passo per la conservazione della biodiversità. Alcune specie sono meglio di altre come prima esperienza nell'ambiente Adriatico. La protezione di alcune specie, che occupano diversi tipi di habitat, portano anche il vantaggio di conservare l'habitat marino e costiero caratteristico di questo mare. Alcune di queste specie potrebbero essere un mammifero, la Foca monaca del Mediterraneo (Monachus monachus), ed un uccello, il Fratino (Charadrius alexandrinus), grazie al fatto che presentano una vasta distribuzione e che abitano i due habitat più tipici dell'Adriatico: rispettivamente le grotte dei litorali rocciosi e le coste sabbiose.

Pertanto uno dei progetti promosso da AdriaPAN, nel prossimo futuro, sarà per salvaguardare l'esistenza di queste due importanti specie protette coordinando insieme tutte le ricerche che si stanno sviluppando su questi argomenti.
Il progetto mira a raggiungere questo obiettivo attraverso una serie di azioni concertate, che include piani per lo sviluppo sostenibile e gli sforzi per aumentare la consapevolezza delle comunità locali. Le principali attività proposte sono le seguenti:

(i) il consolidamento dei dati esistenti, sullo status di queste specie e lo svolgimento di un nuovo censimento;
(ii) la creazione di una mappa degli habitat tutto ideali nell'area,
(iii) l’istituzione di un piano per lo sviluppo sostenibile della regione che prenda in considerazione della conservazione degli habitat attraverso una integrazione compatibile di turismo e attività di pesca.
Per mettere giù tale progetto, chiamato Chamon (Charadrius & Monachus), il segretariato AdriaPAN vuole creare un partenariato di soggetti interessati. Tutti gli interessati a partecipare, sono invitati ad inviare le proprie idee ai seguenti contatti del segretariato di AdriaPAN.

The main goal of AdriaPAN, the network of coastal and marine protected areas in the Adriatic sea, is to preserve the biodiversity of the region. The creation of a real ecological net, between protected areas, is the first step for the conservation of biodiversity. Some species are better than other as first experience in the Adriatic environment. The protection of some species, which occupies different kind of Adriatic habitat, brings also the advantage to preserve the marine and coastal habitat characteristic of this sea. Some of these species could be the Mediterranean Monk seal (Monachus monachus) and the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), because of their wide range of distribution and the fact that they live in the two more typical habitat of Adriatic sea: rocky and sand littoral.
Therefore one of the projects promoted by AdriaPAN, in the next future, will be to safeguard the existence of these two important protected species keeping together all the research carrying on about these topics. The project aims to achieve this through a set of concerted actions which will include plans for sustainable development and efforts to raise the awareness of the local communities.
The main activities proposed are the following:
(i) consolidating existing data on the status of these species and conducting a new census,
(ii) creating a map of all suitable breeding habitats in the area,
(iii) establishing a plan for the sustainable development of the region which takes into consideration and renders compatible habitat conservation, tourism and fishing activities.
To put down such a project, called Chamon (Charadrius & Monachus), the AdriaPAN secretariat is going to create a partnership of stakeholder. All the interested to be involved in it, are invitated to send their own ideas to the following contact of AdriaPAN secretariat.

Towards Adriatic MPAs Networks

Richiamando gli obiettivi del "Regional Working Programme for the Coastal and Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean including the High Sea" (WPCMPA), adottati dalle parti contraenti la Convenzione di Barcellona durante l'ultimo incontro di Marrakech del novembre scorso, e in accordo con i parametri individuati per il 2010 dei lavori della Convenzione sulla Diversità Biologica (CBD) e con quanto previsto dalle politiche ambientali dell'Unione Europea, l'Istituto per la Conservazione del Natura della Repubblica Slovena sta organizzando il III Workshop internazionale sulla Biodiversità in Adriatico con il titolo “Towards a representative network of MPAs in the Adriatic" che si terrà a Pirano (Slovenia) il 28 e 29 ottobre 2010.

Recalling the objectives of the "Regional Working Programme for the Coastal and Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean including the High Sea" (WPCMPA), adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention during their last Meeting in Marrakech in November 2009, and according to the 2012 target adopted within the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity as well as within the environmental policy of the European Union, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation is organizing the 3rd International Workshop on Biodiversity in the Adriatic entitled “Towards a representative network of MPAs in the Adriatic” in Piran (Slovenia) on October 28th – 29th, 2010.

MPAs & fishermen together

Nell' Area Marina Protetta di Torre Guaceto, area protetta sulla costa Adriatica pugliese tra i sottoscrittori italiani della Carta di Cerrano, i pescatori sono stati coinvolti sin dal 2005 nel ridefinire le forme di gestione della pesca sia nel rispetto delle loro tradizioni ed i loro costumi, che per il monitoraggio e le ecisioni da assumere. Hanno potuto così apprezzare direttamente i benefici in termini di disseminazione di uova, larve e fauna ittica adulta all'intorno delle aree chiuse alla pesca. La rivista "Nature", una delle più autorevoli nell'ditoria scientifica, riporta la notizia sull'ultimo numero di aprile.

In the Marine Protected Area of "Torre Guaceto", an AdriaPAN member on the south italian Adriatic coast, since 2005 fishermen have been involved in refining the management protocol to respect their own traditions and customs, and in monitoring results and decision-making. So they could directly apprecciate their benefit from the protected area, as eggs, larvae and adult fish spill over into adjacent fishing ground.

"Nature", one of the most important scientific magazine, writes about that on the April edition.

AdriaPAN with the Adriatic&Ionian Initiative

Il Network delle Aree Protette Adriatiche – AdriaPAN, è stato presentato oggi durante l’incontro dei Senior Officials dell’Iniziativa Adriatico Ionica, IAI, tenutosi ad Ancona. Lo IAI è una iniziativa di cooperazione tra gli 8 Paesi dell’area adriatico-ionica il cui Consiglio è composto dai Ministri degli Affari Esteri dei singoli Paesi. Il Consiglio è l’organo decisionale dello IAI e le intense attività dei Ministri sono preparate dagli incontri periodici dei Senior Officals, che hanno la responsabilità del coordinamento dei vari campi di attività.
L’organizzazione delle attività è divisa in 4 tavoli di lavoro: Piccole e Medie Imprese; Trasporti e cooperazione Marittima; Turismo cultura e cooperazione interuniversitaria; Ambiente.
Al termine dei lavori odierni la rete AdriaPAN è stata invitata a partecipare a quest’ultimo tavolo dell’Ambiente, dai rappresentanti delle delegazioni presenti, con un evidente apprezzamento per l’idea di un spontaneo Network di Aree Protette nato in ambito Adriatico. Le attività potranno essere coordinate con il Segretariato IAI che si trova in Ancona con una propria stuttura di uffici all’interno del quale lavora un piccolo gruppo di esperti coordinati dall’Ambasciatore Alessandro GRAFINI.
Dal prossimo mese la presidenza dello IAI, in costante rotazione tra i Paesi membri, passerà dall’Italia al Montenegro, il cui rappresentante ha già chiesto al termine dell'incontro odierno un coinvolgimento più diretto di AdriaPAN nelle attività del Tavolo Ambiente dello IAI.

The Adriatic Protected Areas Network – AdriaPAN, has been presented during the Senior Officials meeting of the Adriatic & Ionian Initiative, AII, held today in Ancona (Ita). The AII is a cooperation initiative between the 8 Adriatic and Ionian Countries, whose ministers of the Foreign Affairs compose the Adriatic-Ionian Council. The Council is the decisional organ of the AII and the intense activities of the Ministers are prepared from periodic meeting of the Senior Officials, who have the responsibility of the coordination of the various field of cooperation.
The organization of the activities is articulated in 4 tables: Small and medium enterprise; Transport and maritime cooperation; Tourism culture and Inter-university cooperation; Environment.
To this table on Environment, at the end of the today’s presentation, AdriaPAN has been invited to join from all the delegation with evident appreciations for the idea of a spontaneous Protected Areas Network around the Adriatic sea. All the activities there will be coordinated with the AII Secretariat that is based in Ancona and has a its own structure with a small group of expert employed in the offices and coordinated from the Amb. Alessandro GRAFINI.
From the next month the AII Precidency, in the usual periodic rotation, past from Italy to the Montenegro and the delegate from Montenegro has already asked for a more direct AdriaPAN involvement.

Europarc scholarship

.

Ogni anno la Federazione EUROPARC in collaborazione con la Fondazione FVS Alfred Toepfer assegna tre borse di studio Alfred Toepfer Natural Heritage per promettenti giovani ambientalisti con esperienza pratica nel campo della conservazione e nel lavoro delle aree protette.

Attraverso il sostegno finanziario di queste borse di studio, i partecipanti effettuano una visita di studio in una o più aree protette in paesi europei diversi dal proprio, con l'obiettivo di rafforzare la cooperazione internazionale e di promuovere la qualità, l'innovazione e la dimensione europea di gestione delle aree protette. La borse di studio sono di un valore pari a 3.000 ciascuna e sono generosamente donate dalla Fondazione Alfred Toepfer di Amburgo (Germania). Sono assegnate ai vincitori ogni anno in occasione della conferenza annuale EUROPARC.

Each year the EUROPARC Federation in cooperation with the Alfred Toepfer Foundation F.V.S. awards three Alfred Toepfer Natural Heritage Scholarships to promising young conservationists with practical experience in the field of conservation and in the work of protected areas.

By supporting the participants financially the scholarships enable them to undertake a study visit to one or more protected areas in European countries other than their own. The aim being to enhance international cooperation and to advance the quality, innovation and European dimension of protected area management. The awards will each be worth EUR 3.000 and are generously donated by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation in Hamburg (D). They are presented to the scholarship winners each year at the annual EUROPARC conference.

Otranto MPA coming soon

Il Direttore Generale dell'Area Protezione e Natura del Ministero dell'Ambiente italiano Dr. Aldo Cosentino ha annunciato, in un recente incontro tenutosi in occasione della VI edizione di Mediterre, la fiera delle aree protette del Mediterraneo, che nei prossimi 60 giorni si arriverà alla firma della convenzione prevista per il completamento degli studi propedeutici all'attivazione dell'Area Marina Protetta di Otranto.
La bellezza del paesaggio di Faro di Palasela, quindi, e il tratto di costa circostante, il più interessante per grotte e cavità sottomarine d'Italia come segnalato dall'Università del Salento, potrebbe presto essere posto sotto una attenta tutela.

The italian Marine Protected Area of Otranto, in Puglia, could be the next Mpa promoted from the italian Minister of Environment in the Adriatic Sea. This is one of the more interesting news from Mediterre, expo of mediterranea protected areas, helding in Bari during this week.
The Marine Protected Area of Otranto is placed along the coast around Faro di Palasela, a wonderful areas of south Adriatic coast.

Tra giovedì e venerdì scorsi (10-11 dicembre) un gruppo di 7 esemplari di Capodoglio (Physeter macrocephalus) si è spiaggiato sulla costa italiana del Mar Adriatico in prossimità del promontorio del Gargano. Tutti gli esemplari sono morti nell’arco delle 24 ore successive. E’ il primo episodio di uno spiaggiamento di massa in Mediterrraneo per questa specie.
