Mobile Species: Charadrius Alexandrinus on the Adriatic Coast

Italian below

With the title “The Kentish plover inside and outside protected areas”, on July the 15th, 2020, a group of expert of the Italy's Adriatic coast has developed a discussion in video-call about the conservation of the one of the most important marine migratory species of birds in Mediterrean area: Charadrius alexandrinus.
The meeting was promoted from AdriaPAN, the coordination of Adriatic coastal and marine protected areas, with the support of MedPAN within the InterregMED “MPA Networs project.

The protection of Kentish plover was already discussed during the MedPAN workshop Managing highly mobile species, held in Akyaka- Turkey, on November from 12th to14th, 2019, within the Session “The impact of marine litter and pollution on highly mobile species: challenges beyond boundaries”. During that meeting, under the coordination of Maria ROUSOU-DFMR and Pierre VIGNES-MedPAN, the panelist Fabio Vallarola-AdriaPAN, with his presentation Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), conservation on Adriatic Italian coast talked about the difficulties of the reproduction of such a species because of the cleaning of beaches using bulldozers, everywhere on the Mediterranean coasts, as a result of big quantity of plastic beached. The problem, in fact, is that the Charadrius alexandrinus makes the nest on that beachs, on the sand, in the same period of the cleaning. In the Spring period between april and June, all the municipalities organize the beach cleaning before the arrive of the high season for the normal seaside tourism.
Several voluntary organizations, everywhere along the Mediterranean beaches, work hard to save as many nest they can, but at the moment, the most of good results are registered only inside the protected areas. Too little for the conservation of Charadrius alexandrinus: classified as “endangered” on the IUCN Italian Red List.

The last meeting, within the InterregMED “MPA Networks” project, has been coordinated from Fabio VALLAROLA as well. It has been invited to the discussion all the experts from each Region of Italy's Adriatic coast and with them all the Protected areas managers, Associations coordinators, nature conservation surveillance corps, and scientific departments of national institutions.
Here the list of the panelist from the ten Regions on the Italy's Adriatic coast: Veneto- Alessandro SARTORI; Abruzzo- Dante CASERTA e Massimo PELLEGRINI; Friuli Venezia Giulia- Paolo UTMAR; Molise- Luigi LUCCHESE; Marche- Mina PASCUCCI e Claudio SEBASTIANELLI; Puglia- Simone TODISCO e Anthony GREEN; Emilia Romagna- Alessio FARIOLI e Roberto TINARELLI. Other experts have been connected during the meeting from ISPRA, LIPU-BirdLife International, WWF, Coast Guard corp, etc.

Two main result has been achieved with the meeting: 1) the possibility to have a coordination between the several experiences that carry on along the Adriatic coasts; 2) the opportunity to create a unique protocol, between the institutions, associations, experts, and surveillance authorities, about modalities and roles for the protection of the nests.

A next meeting is going to be organized on the next months to work on such a protocol.

  • 1) la presa di coscienza di una concreta possibilità di avere un coordinamento tra le diverse esperienze che si sviluppano lungo le coste adriatiche;
